Deputy Fire Marshal

The City of Steamboat Springs has an excellent new opportunity to join our Fire Department as a Deputy Fire Marshal.
This position works in a dual-role capacity serving the City of Steamboat Springs and the Steamboat Springs Area Fire Protection District, primarily performing a variety of administrative and technical work related to fire inspection, and fire prevention, and also serves as a Firefighter/EMT when called upon to do so.
The qualified individual:
Reviews basic and complex construction blueprints and plans for compliance with fire code.
Meets with designers and contractors to resolve design problems within scope of knowledge and authority.
Inspects new and existing structures, construction and remodel sites for compliance with fire codes. Resolves compliance problems with owners within scope of knowledge and authority.
Conducts plan review and inspections of dry hydrants, fire sprinkling systems, fire alarm systems and all elements of a fire, life-safety or protection system.
Reviews plans for city and district Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meetings for, emergency access, fire flow demand / availability, fire hydrant spacing and attends city TAC meetings.
Conducts State of Colorado, fire plan reviews and inspections when requested. (Day-care, UST’s, Schools, Fire Suppression systems etc.)
Responds to major fires; conducts investigations and analysis to determine cause and origin of fire; prepares analytical reports to reveal findings.
Conducts inspections on blasting, fireworks, tents, open burns, fire pits, and other special event permits.
Responds to complaints regarding fire code violations and fire hazards.
Issues warnings and citations for fire code violations.
Maintains a variety of data and records regarding fire inspection or prevention activities; prepares reports regarding fire inspection or prevention as required.
Conducts in-depth fire safety research, as needed.
Assists Fire Marshal with duties as assigned.
Assists in other department administrative activities as assigned.
Assists Fire Marshal by providing work direction, guidance and training to other Fire Inspectors.
Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness and emergency aid activities.
Assists with Fire Code enforcement, building safety education programs and inspections of businesses in the city.
Assists with inspection of businesses for new and yearly renewals of Liquor Licenses for the City and District.
Assists and/or Conducts Fire Safety presentations.
Assists with voluntary home fire inspections.
Assists with the Community Safety Awareness Program.
Responds to working structure fires and other large emergency incidents, as called upon to do so.
We are seeking the following qualifications:
General Education and Experience:
(A) High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Extensive technical knowledge of modern fire prevention principles, procedures, techniques and equipment; technical working knowledge of building, electrical, mechanical and fire codes; Extensive technical knowledge of inspection techniques; working knowledge of fire suppression techniques and equipment; and a working knowledge of first aid.
(B) Skill in the operation of the tools and equipment related to the job.
(C) Ability to effectively apply standard fire prevention techniques; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public; and the ability to meet special requirements.
Must be 21 years or older; must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid State driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any State; no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven years; U.S. citizen; must be able to read and write the English language; must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
Education, Experience, and Special Requirements for Deputy Fire Marshal:
- Successful completion of a Firefighter Academy and must have or obtain Colorado Firefighter I certification within one year of hire date and Firefighter II Certification within two years of hire date. Must maintain FFII or greater certification.
- Must possess a current healthcare provider level CPR card. Must have or be able to obtain Colorado EMT certificate within 3 months of hire.
- Must possess a CO state Fire Inspector I certification or equivalent.
- Must have or obtain CO state Fire Inspector II certification within 6 months of hire
- Must have Advanced Fire / Arson Investigation Training.
- ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300 (within 6 months of hire) and NIMS IS-700 Certification
