Job Description:

Independently dispatches and coordinates the response of emergency ambulance units to the scene of accidents or distress and coordinates emergency medical service activities involving the city ambulance program on an assigned shift at the central unit; and performs other related duties as required.

The current position vacancy is responsible for dispatching ambulances on Oahu to respond to 911 emergency calls for pre-hospital emergency medical care and emergency ambulance service, coordinating personnel scheduling, and assuring that the necessary Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel are assigned to all units.

Special Working Conditions: Must be able to handle tasks in rapid succession, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, communicate clearly and calmly, and make sound decisions under stressful conditions. This position may be mobilized in the event of an emergency and may require work during or following natural disasters and other major events or incidents. Will be required to work rotating shifts and rotating days off. Includes weekend and holiday work. Current work shifts are 12:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Equivalent to graduation from high school.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

Two (2) years of experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, and satisfactory completion of a State of Hawaii Department of Health approved Emergency Medical Technician (Basic Life Support) training program.

Verification Requirement: You must submit proof of completion of Emergency Medical Technician training and evidence of any current and/or past Emergency Medical Technician certification(s). Please attach an electronic copy of your diploma and/or official transcript which shows the embossed seal and your current and/or past EMT certification(s) to your application. LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

1. Valid appropriate driver’s license (automobile), prior to appointment.

2. Current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support certificate, prior to appointment.

3. Current Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certificate issued by the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch, prior to completion of probation.

The above licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment. Maintenance of these licenses/certifications is a condition of employment.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION: In addition to meeting the above minimum qualifications, your application will be further evaluated. Your score will be based on the quality, quantity, and/or recency of your training and experience.

EMPLOYMENT SUITABILITY:

To determine the selectee’s employment suitability for the position of Emergency Medical Technician III (Communications Center Coordinator), the Department of Human Resources will conduct an evaluation of personal suitability, including reviewing information from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Due to the nature of the position, selectees are required to be fingerprinted as part of their employment suitability.
