Salary: $36,914 – $60,000 Annually

Job Description:

Firefighters at the University of Notre Dame are the primary source of fire protection, emergency medical services, fire prevention, fire detection and fire safety education for the Notre Dame community. Fire Captains are the front line supervisors of firefighters during their 24 hour shifts and are the incident commander on all campus emergencies. The Fire Captain must also be able to perform as a firefighter, which includes maintaining a constant state of readiness to respond to medical emergencies, reports of fires and activated fire alarms at the University of Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College, Holy Cross College and surrounding areas. When not responding to emergency calls, Fire Captains supervise the following activities: inspection of buildings for fire code and safety violations, testing and inspections of fire alarm systems, performance of maintenance on department equipment and the providing of fire safety education to students, staff and faculty.

Shall be considered University critical staffing.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED

5+ years as a firefighter

2+ years in a supervisory capacity

State drivers/operators license, Firefighter 1 & 2 (or equivalent) certification, Hazardous Materials Operations certification, Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification. Fire Officer 1 and strategy and tactics certification.

Ability to function as part of a team, can operate with minimal supervision in high stress and life threatening environments, willingness to risk well being to save a life, possession of ability to exercise compassion, patience,and empathy to members of our community in crisis.

Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications NFPA 1021 2014 Edition

NFPA 1582 Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments

Preferred Qualifications:

A.A.S or BA/BS in related field preferred

Confined Space Rescue certification, High Angle Rescue certification, Trench Rescue certification, EMT-Advanced certification preferred.

Preference will also be extended to candidates who have work experience with fire alarm systems and water base fire protection systems.
