BURLINGTON, Wisconsin (10,603 residents). Starting salary: $70,000 +/- DOQE Growing, full-service community (including Library and Municipal Airport) located in Racine County ap- proximately 30 miles southwest of Milwaukee and 70 miles northwest of Chicago, seeks an ex- perienced Fire Chief to lead its Fire Department. The fire department consists of three full-time fire engineers, a full-time fire inspector and approximately 40 volunteers. Nestled along the banks of the Fox and White Rivers, Burlington offers a superior quality of life to its residents and visitors alike. The community has excellent schools, a thriving downtown and several successful industrial parks. Appointed by the Police & Fire Commission, the Fire Chief reports to the City Administrator, and oversees the provision of fire suppression, hazardous materials handling, fire prevention activities, public education and fire investigation services.
Emergency medical services are currently provided by the Burlington Area Rescue Squad (BRS), a separate 501c3 volunteer organization. In 2014, to provide support to the BRS, the Fire Department started a First Responder Program where medically trained firefighters respond immediately to any rescue call. The first responders establish initial contact with the patient, obtain a medical history and provide basic medical care. The first responders work closely with the BRS to facilitate a smooth transition of patient care. The 2016 Fire Department budget is $1,047,349.
The Department has an ISO rating of 3, and responded to 229 fire calls and 777 first responder calls, totalling 1,006 calls for service in 2015. The City seeks candidates with a comprehensive knowledge of modern firefighting methods, emergency services, fire prevention, public educa- tion, fire safety, fire inspection, and budget preparation. Preferred candidates will possess a Bachelorâ€™s Degree in Fire Services, Fire Science, Public Administration or related discipline; Masterâ€™s Degree is desirable. Candidates should have five to eight years increasingly responsible experience in fire service management, with solid experience in managing a volunteer fire de- partment. Should a candidate not have a degree, the City may consider 15 years of experience in fire-fighting and EMS including 5 years of supervisory experience. The City is seeking a skilled and creative leader who has successfully lead transformation efforts. Must possess strong oral and written communication abilities.
