Job Description:

The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District is seeking an energetic and experienced fire service leader with strong communication and interpersonal skills for the position of Fire Chief. A commitment to high professional standards is required and experience with both fire and EMS is required. The District spans over 38 square miles covering parts of three townships (St. Charles, Campton, and Wayne), within two counties (Kane and DuPage) in Illinois. It includes unincorporated areas in these townships as well as sections of the Villages of Wayne, Wasco and Campton Hills. The department’s mission is to “Provide world class fire, EMS and community risk reduction programs in the community through leadership, innovation, collaboration and partnerships. They also strive to “Promote fire and life safety and awareness within the community through administrative oversight for incident response, code enforcement and public education, accomplished through training, prevention, communication, emergency response, facilities, apparatus, equipment and other related emergency and non-emergency activities The Fire Department accomplishes its mission through fire prevention and public fire safety education, fire suppression, rescue, hazard mitigation, and advanced life support services.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

TheDistrictisseekinganexperiencedFireChiefcandidateto lead its staff comprised of three (3) Captain/Shift Commander, twelve (12) full-time firefighter/paramedics (provided by private sector contractor), thirty-five (35) part-time personnel consisting of three (3) Captains, six (6) Lieutenants and twenty (20) firefighter/paramedics. The Department is governed by a Board of Trustees who are elected by the residents of the District. The department provides full Fire and EMS (Advanced Life Support) services with licensed Paramedics in the State of Illinois and is part of the St. Joseph’s Hospital EMS System. Patients are also transported to Delnor Hospital, Central DuPage Hospital and Sherman Hospital in addition to St. Joseph’s in Elgin. The department provides full fire prevention services under the direction of one Captain/Shift Commander and a Company Inspection program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate shall have experience working with a diverse workforce of full-time and part-time personnel. Must be able to demonstrate the technical aspects of emergency scene management (NIMS), EMS (ALS and BLS) leadership and management and transport, fire prevention programs, hazardous materials response, special technical rescue response, MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) operations, response and management. Superior strategic planning skills, fiscal and budget management (experience with tax referendums a plus) must be able to be demonstrated through career experience. Residency is required within a reasonable distance of the District for emergency response if not already residing in the District.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ten (10) or more years of progressively responsible experience, and or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Bachelor’s degree from and accredited four-year university or college, fire science or related field preferred. Graduate and Masters level study and degree attainment is a plus.
  • Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal Fire Officer III, Chief Fire Officer and National Fire Academy Chief Fire Officer certification preferred.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Posted salary is $70,000 (negotiable), depending on qualifications and experience along with a negotiated benefit package.
