The Fire Department
Prior to 1920 when the city hired its first professional firefighter, the Palo Alto Fire Department operated as a volunteer fire service organization that served the community. The department, over its existence, has continued to evolve to remain cutting-edge as the community has changed. Because of growing demand in the industry, the Palo Alto Fire Department began providing paramedic services in 1975 and also began providing fire-rescue and ambulances services to Stanford under contract. The Palo Alto Fire Department has continued to keep pace with the industry, as demands changed within the city and as further service offerings were made available to the community.
Today the department provides its services from six fire stations, located strategically throughout the city with the Fiscal Year 2019 approved operating budget of approximately $32 million. The department is staffed with 96 uniformed and 8 civilian professionals. The department deploys 6 Type 1 engines, 1 Tractor-drawn Tiller Truck, 2 Type III engines, 2 Type VI engines, 5 Ambulances, and various trailers and specialty apparatus. The department currently cross-staffs two engine companies with ambulances full time. This allows the crews assigned to those apparatus to deploy the most appropriate resource to mitigate the incident they are responding to.

The City of Palo Alto is seeking an accomplished professional to serve as the next Fire Chief. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop a vision, strategy, and roadmap to lead the Fire Department and its partners. The Fire Chief is an executive level position that reports to the City Manager and will work closely with his leadership team as well as other key regional stakeholders. This position requires creative and strategic leadership with the ability to fully implement best practices for deployment of firefighting resources as well as emergency management issues. Top candidates for this challenging leadership role must thrive in a robust, fast-paced, and complex environment.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have the ability to develop a vision, strategy, and roadmap to lead the Fire Department and its partners. As a member of the executive team, the Fire Chief will have exceptional communication skills and be able to work effectively as a leader of a team. The ideal candidate will be amiable, open, and honest and possess a reputation as a firm, competent, fair, and consistent leader. The Fire Chief will be considered a progressive leader within the fire service and be recognized for being an ongoing contributor to the advancement of the profession.
Education and Experience
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
- Equivalent to possession of a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Business or Public Administration.
- Five years of experience in a major fire service function, two years of which must have been in a command position.
