This position is represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters – Local 1264 (IAFF) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the IAFF.Â If the person selected is not affiliated with the International Association of Fire Fighters â€“ Local 1264 union, he or she must become a member in good standing within 30 days of beginning work.

Â Example of Duties::
Under supervision of the Division Deputy Fire Chief, operates under authority of AS 18.70 andÂ responds to emergency calls for assistance, performs field investigations, building, life safety, and fire inspections, reviews existing buildings and new building construction plans, investigates fire origin and cause.Â Performs administrative duties as necessary.
As a code enforcement officer, is authorized to issue citations for enforcement of AMC Titles 8,15,16,21 and 23. Perform code inspections, analysis, interpretation, and submit detailed reports as required. Conduct plans review, fire, and life safety inspections as necessary and required under AS.18.70 for fire code compliance, Certificates of Occupancy, and various other license and permit purposes. Enforces various Anchorage Municipal Code titles.
Conducts final approval tests for fire protection and life safety systems. Performs and assists with fire investigations. Issues permits, stop-work, and non-occupancy orders.Â Other related duties as assigned or required.
Duties can require frequent driving and occasional lifting or carrying 25-50 lbs.Â Work environmentÂ can beÂ subject to working in inclement weather and potential exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes,Â and exhaust.
Â Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and six (6) years experience with fire, life, or building safety inspections.
Associate’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Business Administration,Â Public Administration, or a related discipline and four (4) years experience with fire, life, or building safety inspections.
Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Business Administration,Â Public Administration, or a related discipline and two (2) years experience with fire, life, or building safety inspections.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and an International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner or Building Plans Examiner certification and five (5) years experience with fire, life, or building safety inspections.
Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License by time of hire.
Must possess or obtain an International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner or Building Plans Examiner certification within one (1) year of hire.
Preference for applicants that currently possess anÂ International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner or Building Plans Examiner certification, and/or an International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I or II certification.

As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully completeÂ aÂ drug test prior to beginning work.
Selected candidate(s) mustÂ possess or obtain an International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner or Building Plans Examiner certification within one (1) year of hire.Â If the individual selected for this position fails to obtain this certification within one (1) year of hire he/she will be terminated.
All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
