Job Description:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR FIREFIGHTER:

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and criminal history background check is required prior to employment.

2. Current enrollment in a state recognized Fire Academy (if non-certified at time of application). Candidate must receive State of Florida Certificate of Compliance prior to official job offer.

3.  A valid  State of Florida Driver license  free from moving violation citations for a period of not less than six  months preceding employment; and within the past three years applicant must have  had  no convictions for reckless driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances and  must not have  had  a driver’s license suspended pursuant to Florida law. “The Driving Policy is currently under review. You may qualify under the new policy; we encourage you to apply for the position.”

4. Candidates must possess a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate provided by an authorized CPAT testing center prior to interview date. Valid CPAT certificates must be dated within 1 year of application date.

5. Alachua County will pay for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training and certification, EMT certification must be obtained within one year of employment in the FF classification.  Applicants will be required to make a two year commitment as a full time certified EMT with Alachua County Fire Rescue.

FIREFIGHTER EMT 56:

  3. Prior to the interview date, proof of the following must be provided:

At the time of hire, proof of the following must be provided:
  1. Current State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance.
  2. Possession and maintenance of State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification is a condition of continued employment with Alachua County Fire Rescue. Individuals must be certified as Emergency Medical Technician in order to perform EMT duties.

5. All firefighters will be hired into the position as a Firefighter/EMT. Once the candidate  has successfully met with and been approved by the County’s Medical Director to provide Advanced Life Support care, the candidate will then be reclassified as a Firefighter Paramedic.

6.  Current designation as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider.
Upon appointment to position, the following must be completed and maintained as a condition of employment:

1. Successful completion of a course in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support / International Trauma Life Support must be obtained within the first twelve months upon appointment to position.

2. Certification by the Alachua County Medical Director within the first month of employment and maintain this certification as a condition of employment.

3. Possession and maintenance of a State of Florida Paramedic Certification is a condition of continued employment with Alachua County Fire Rescue.

NOTE: APPLICANTS SELECTED FROM THIS POSTING MAY BE PLACED ON AN ACTIVE ELIGIBILITY LIST FOR 24 MONTHS.

NOTE: This position for firefighter is funded under a Federal SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) Grant program. This grant is funded through February of 2021. In the event that funding is not continued for these positions, the positions will be eliminated unless otherwise directed by the BOCC at the end of the grant program. Employees are eligible for benefits but have no rights to permanent employment.

Position Summary

This is responsible technical work in Fire Rescue Services protecting life and property by performing firefighting, driving apparatus, performing emergency medical aid, hazardous materials and fire prevention duties.

An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for safely transporting a crew and medical equipment to the patient, assisting in providing immediate care to the critically ill or injured on an emergency basis, transporting the patient to a medical facility, and performing firefighter duties including combating, extinguishing and preventing fires as required.

Work is performed within standard operating procedure guidelines and an employee is expected to exercise independent judgment, based upon firefighting and emergency medical training. Work is performed under the supervision a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through observation of results obtained.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs fire fighting activities including operating related fire equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.

Provides emergency medical treatment to the Basic Life Support level of certification and training. Provides assistance with Advanced Life Support medical procedures.

Receives emergency and non-emergency calls from dispatch; drives the emergency unit to the call and/or hospital using the most expeditious route.

Utilizes all required safety measures when performing assigned job duties.Responds to medical, rescue, fire and other emergency and non-emergency calls.

Operates radio in accordance with system standards and guidelines.

Assists in loading patient and/or transportation of patient to a medical facility.Makes up stretcher and cleans inside of vehicle after each call.

Inspects vehicle daily; insures that vehicle is clean, fully equipped and in proper operating condition and in compliance with all state and local laws.

Prepares reports as required.

Attends and participates in company drills and training sessions.Performs routine station housekeeping and routine office work as required.

Performs related work as required.

Ability to follow precise technical instructions in an emergency situation.

Ability to learn and operate relatively complex fire fighting and rescue equipment.
