Covering 48 blocks, Atlantic City is home to 40,000 permanent residents and entertains 30 million visitors per year. Atlantic City is seeking firefighters to assist its Fire Department in protecting the City’s residents, visitors, and properties from fires. No prior experience is required.
Standard duties during an assigned tour of include, but are not limited to:
Extinguishing fires; performing rescue operations; aiding in emergency situations involving hazardous or toxic materials; extricating victims; operating fire apparatus; administering emergency medical treatment; maintaining all related equipment, buildings and grounds; and performing related work;
Providing aid to victims at scene of emergency by administering emergency medical treatment such as first aid, CPR or EMT treatment.
Performing strenuous physical activities such as lifting heavy firefighting equipment, climbing standard and aerial ladders, lifting, and carrying people and equipment for rescue and salvage;
Performing duties and engaging in heavy physical exertion in environments of extreme heat and dust, in high and confined areas and smoke-filled spaces, in all kinds of weather, and to maintaining physical activity for prolonged periods of time; and
Working closely with people, including functioning as a team member, and exercising tact or diplomacy and displaying compassion, understanding, and patience.

EDUCATION: Graduation from high school, vocational high school, or possession of an approved high school equivalency certificate.
AGE: Not less than 18 nor more than 35 years of age at the announced closing date for filing applications for the position. In determining maximum age eligibility of veterans, time spent in active military service during periods specified may offset the maximum age requirement as permitted by law.
NOTE: When applicants have reached their 35th birthday, they are considered to be over 35 years old. Age limits are based on the announced closing date for filing applications.
NOTE: In accordance with NJSA 40A:14-45, applicants who are qualified firefighters having served in a volunteer fire company or force of the municipality for at least two (2) years preceding appointment may be not less than 21 years of age, nor more than 40 years of age.
CITIZENSHIP: Must be a citizen of the United States. Successful candidates must demonstrate New Jersey residency as required by law.
LICENSE: Successful candidates must complete a firefighting training program approved by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Division of Fire Safety, within the timeframe specified by the City. Successful candidates are not permitted to participate in firefighting activities prior to completion of this training.
Successful candidates will be required to successfully complete an approved Emergency Medical Technician Program and maintain certification while employed as a Fire Fighter.
Successful candidates will be required to successfully complete CPR training and maintain a certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association while employed as a Fire Fighter.
Successful candidates will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
ICS 200 and FFI Certification is preferred.
Atlantic City residents will be given preference. Successful candidates will be required to submit to a post-offer medical (including drug testing) and psychological examination. IMPORTANT TESTING OTHER PROCEDURES Atlantic City Fire Department Examination Testing for the position of Firefighter is on May 11, 2019 at the Atlantic City Convention Center located at One Convention Boulevard, Atlantic City, New Jersey 08401.
Candidates who successfully pass the written exam will be eligible to take the physical examination. Successful candidates will be notified by June 1 of the date and time they should report for the physical examination. Notice will be sent by email only. A practice course walk-through session for the physical exam will be held at the Atlantic City Convention Center between May 22 and May 29 between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. by appointment only. It is strongly recommended that eligible candidates for the physical exam attend at least one practice session to familiarize themselves with the evolutions.
