Firefighter positions have been created as a result of funding received by the City of Fort Myers Fire Department from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant. These positions have a two-year period of performance unless the proceeds are earlier terminated. There is no requirement to retain firefighters beyond the period of performance.
This is an opportunity for a qualified applicant to be offered a position at the Fort Myers Fire Department and attend the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy, Basic Firefighter Program. Upon successful completion of the program and successfully passing the physical ability test, the Trainee will continue employment as a Firefighter and begin a one-year probationary period.
STARTING SALARY: Salary after 2% VEBA Benefit:
$16.38/hrÂ Â Â Â $40,884.48/annual
(48 hr/wk) Kelly Day every 3rd week
The individual serving as a firefighter works under the Engineer through the direction of the Company Officer. This is skilled fire fighting work involving the protection of life and property through prevention and suppression of fires, rescuing persons from danger, emergency medical rescue, performing salvage, hazardous materials control, and mitigation and related follow up work. Work of the position is of a mechanical and technical nature requiring efficiency and safety in the performance of duties.
Firefighters are expected to perform certain essential functions derived from the performance objectives stated in NFPA 1001, â€œStandard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualificationsâ€ in a safe and efficient manner at emergency incidents.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
â€¢Â Â Respond to a wide variety of emergent and non-emergent calls such as structural and environmental fires, traffic accidents, gas leaks, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and service calls.
â€¢Â Â Fights fires under departmental procedures and as directed by a fire Company Officer. Connects and lays hose lines, maneuvering nozzles and directing fire streams, sets ladders and operates fire streams; uses hand and power tools to ventilate and enter burning structures for the purpose of extinguishing fires and to perform search and rescue operations; raises, lowers and climbs ladders to enter structures; performs salvage, clean up and overhaul operations during and after fires to remove hazards and protect property.
â€¢Â Â Participates in specialized rescue operations including aerial and underground situations involving the use of rigging and shoring; operates specialized hand and power tools and equipment to rescue traffic accident victims.
â€¢Â Â Cleans, services and makes minor repairs to ensure operational readiness of vehicles, apparatus, hoses, and emergency equipment.
â€¢Â Â Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in firefighting techniques, equipment and apparatus operation, medical aid, heavy rescue, hazardous materials, fire prevention, equipment maintenance and a wide variety of other subjects related to the fire service; studies local geography and conditions affecting fire operations; studies and learns department operating procedures and policies; studies and learns inspection regulations and fire prevention laws, codes and departmental policies and procedures; studies and learns procedures and techniques for the mitigation of hazardous materials incidents.
â€¢Â Â Perform emergency medical services and first aid. Perform triage, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, wound evaluation and treatment, and other first aide and life-saving techniques.
â€¢Â Â Prepare clear, comprehensive oral and written reports.
â€¢Â Â Correspond to e-mail, complete on-line training, complete reports and documentation in a clear a concise manner.
â€¢Â Â Maintain and expand job knowledge. Participate in in-service training, continuing education and practice street drills; study, practice, and maintain a working knowledge of up-to-date job-related techniques through formal and informal classwork, training sessions, and on-the-job experience.
â€¢Â Â Provide formal and informal instruction, training and guidance to firefighters and the public.
â€¢Â Â Participate in department sponsored physical training to maintain adequate physical condition to perform job.
â€¢Â Â Perform fire inspections, code enforcement and fire drills. Inspect buildings or structures to become familiar with potential fire hazards, conduct pre-incident planning, and identify code violations. Conduct fire drills at target hazards.
â€¢Â Â Participates in standard station chores including cleaning, minor repair and upkeep of department buildings, grounds, and facilities, shopping, cooking, and general station upkeep.
â€¢Â Â Participates in various support assignments, including, but not limited to, the maintenance of inventory records, scheduled inspections of department equipment, hydrant inspections and maintenance and fire-flow testing, ordering, inventorying and issuance of safety equipment, preparation and maintenance of department maps and pre-fire plans, and the preparation of specifications and budgets for new equipment and apparatus.
â€¢Â Â Participates in the development and implementation of the departmentâ€™s public education and community outreach programs and activities.
â€¢Â Â Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND STEPS TO ATTEND THE
SOUTHWEST FLORIDA PUBLIC SERVICE ACADEMY,
BASIC FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM:
â€¢Â Â Must be at least 18 years of age
â€¢Â Â Must have a High School diploma or GED and must take and pass the TABE Test (Test for Adult Basic Education) and achieve a passing score which is 10 or above in each area, Reading, Math and Language; OR have a minimum of a 2 year college degree
â€¢Â Â Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License
â€¢Â Â Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement
â€¢Â Â Must be a legal United States Resident
â€¢Â Â Must be Tobacco Free for a minimum of twelve (12) months prior to attending class
â€¢Â Â Not have a dishonorable discharge from any of the armed forces in the United States
â€¢Â Â Must be Drug Free for a minimum of three (3) – five (5) years prior, depending on substance use, Certified Drug Test required
â€¢Â Â Must successfully complete a CPRÂ Course, will need to submit a copy of card with application
â€¢Â Â Must successfully complete the pre-requisite course, Medical First Responder (not required if you have your EMT or EMTP – Must provide copy of valid certificate)
â€¢Â Â Must submit application to the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy with all requested paperwork completed
â€¢Â Â Must attend a mandatory orientation
FIREFIGHTER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
â€¢Â Â High School diploma or GED.
â€¢Â Â Must possess State of Florida Firefighter Certification at time of hire or be able to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
â€¢Â Â Must be able to obtain State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification within eighteen (18) months of hire.
â€¢Â Â Must successfully pass the physical ability test.
â€¢Â Â Must be able to successfully demonstrate swimming competency as per Department requirements.
â€¢Â Â Must submit to a comprehensive pre-employment background check, including a criminal records check, medical examination, and drug screen.
â€¢Â Â Must reside within Lee, Collier, Charlotte or Hendry County within six (6) months after successful completion of the new hire probationary period.
â€¢Â Â Must be at least 18 years of age.
â€¢Â Â Must be able to work rotating shifts.
ADDITIONAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
â€¢Â Â Has knowledge of proper use and care of equipment used in emergency response situations (protective gear, breathing apparatus, extinguishers, ladders, hoses, rescue equipment, etc.)
â€¢Â Â Has knowledge of the various extinguishing systems found in buildings (standpipes, sprinklers, etc.) as well as knowledge of how to supply these systems. Knowledge of the various alarm systems and how these systems function.
â€¢Â Â Has knowledge of firefighting tactics such as extinguishment, forcible entry, rescue, safety and overhaul.
â€¢Â Â Able to learn street and fire hydrant locations; becomes familiar with area and its roads and waterway networks.
â€¢Â Â Able to operate both as a team member and independently at incidents of uncertain duration.
â€¢Â Â Able to perform prolonged and arduous physical work under adverse and hazardous conditions, including confined spaces and heights in excess of ten feet.
