An Internationally Accredited Fire Department, being first accredited in 1998 and reaccredited in 2013, the County of Henrico Division of Fire serves Henrico County. We have twenty fire stations staffed by over 500 highly trained and certified firefighters. All field personnel are State certified firefighters and also certified to the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level. Over 200 are also certified to provide advanced life support (ALS) services. The Division currently has on duty each day 20 engines, 15 Advanced Life Support Medic units, 5 ladder trucks, 3 Heavy Rescue Squads, 2 EMS supervisors, 3 Battalion Chiefs and a District Chief. We also have other specialty equipment available each day. Utilizing the above staff and equipment we provide the following services:  Urban and Rural fire services and response; Emergency Medical Advanced life support services and transport; Specialized Teams (HAZMAT, Tech Rescue, Dive/Swift Water); Fire Prevention, Education, and Investigations; Response and Recovery to natural and man-made disasters.

General State of Duties:

Engages directly in firefighting, rescue, fire prevention, equipment operation and maintenance, fire station maintenance, community service, training activities or ?xml:namespace prefix = “st1” ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” /EMS functions in the Division of Fire; does related work as required.

Ability and willingness to learn; ability to communicate with others effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to maintain composure and to work well with peers, superiors and the public under stressful emergency conditions, as well as under more relaxed conditions; ability to comply with oral and written instructions, to follow directions and to carry out orders under stressful emergency conditions, as well as under more relaxed conditions; ability to exercise sound judgment during emergency situations; ability to solve problems in a logical, creative and resourceful manner; ability to climb a ladder and work from heights; ability to work in confined spaces, ability to work in and around temperatures extremes (both heat and cold); ability to operate a motor vehicle; ability to keep simple records and to make oral and written reports; basic math ability; dependability; positive attitude; flexibility; physical conditioning which permits the activities necessary in and inherent to the firefighting profession.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

The Division of Fire desires the following knowledge, skills and/or experience for the position of entry-level firefighter position:  continuous professional development, familiarity with Henrico County, technical skills related to the fire service, proven leadership and team participation.

A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and possess a valid Virginia driver’s license with a Division of Motor Vehicles record of no more than six (6) demerit points in one (1) year or nine (9) demerit points in two (2) years. Must submit to a battery of pre-employment tests (written and physical strength/agility). Must be eligible for and successfully complete a Commonwealth of Virginia EMT-B Certification course as part of the Division of Fire Recruit Academy. Requires a pre-employment physical examination and/or medical tests and substance-abuse tests administered by Henrico County Employee Health Services or their contractees, the components of which are based on and appropriate to the specific sensory and/or physical demands of the position.
