Job Description:
The City of Oxnard is excited to announce that it is currently accepting applications for the Firefighter Trainee position within the Fire Department. As a Firefighter Trainee, incumbents will attend a 16-week fire academy conducted by the Oxnard Fire Department designed to provide an overview of the fire service, training in various procedures and policies, emergency medical services, fire suppression techniques, fire prevention practices, and physical fitness.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES: (Upon successful completion of fire academy.)
ï‚· Responds to emergency medical calls
ï‚· Fire alarms, rescues, hazardous materials, and other
emergency calls
ï‚· Protects life, environment and property endangered by
fire and other hazards
ï‚· Participates in regular fire prevention inspections
ï‚· Assists in maintenance of fire stations and equipment
ï‚· Participates in training exercises
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Firefighter Trainee is considered qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the following:
Education:
ï‚· High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
ï‚· No experience necessary
Highly desirable:
ï‚· Ability to speak Spanish
ï‚· Completion of a Fire Academy
 Bachelor’s degree
 EMT – Paramedic
ï‚· Haz Mat Technician
ï‚· Swift Water
ï‚· Rescue Systems
License & Certificates Required to Qualify:
ï‚· Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) (CPAT cannot be morethan one year old at the time of application)
ï‚· Current California EMT (not an EMT course completion record)
OR
ï‚· National Registry EMT (NREMT) card
 Must obtain a Ventura County EMT Card at the time of appointment to position

Current Salary Range: $4330.99/month during academy
