Employees shall reside within sixty (60) minutes normal drive time measured on a drivable route from the employee’s residence to the closest West Des Moines city limit. Must be an Iowa resident within two years of hire date and maintain residency throughout duration of employment.
Job Summary & Requirements
Under the general direction of the Lieutenant, works a rotating 24 hour shift based schedule performing fire suppression activities to save life and property, rescue operations, and fire prevention activities (school visits, public relations, fire inspections, etc.). Performs a variety of emergency medical operations in coordination with EMS department personnel. Performs routine vehicle, tool, and facility maintenance on a daily basis.
Requires High School Diploma or GED (firefighter I and EMT certification preferred); valid Iowa driver’s license; and good driving record; Must also have the ability to lift, drag, and/or carry heavy objects, in excess of 100 lbs; the ability to maintain good physical condition as required by the job and MFPRSI standards; and the ability to report to work as scheduled on time.
Civil Service Exam
Only those applicants submitting the required application materials and meeting the minimum requirements will be invited to take a written examination. Applicants receiving a passing score on the written exam will be invited to participate in the CPAT. See Special Note # 1. Applicants receiving the top 30 passing scores on the written exam and passing the CPAT will be invited to participate in the Oral Board Interview. The date, time, and location of the exam(s) will be provided to applicants who meet the requirements. Applicants must pass each test to be considered for placement on the Certified List.
Special Note # 1: All applicants that pass the written exam are required to attend the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Orientation. To be eligible to participate in the CPAT practice sessions, you must attend the CPAT Orientation.
Special Note # 2: The written exam will tentatively take place the week of April 16, 2018. The CPAT Orientation and practice dates CPAT will be in May – June 2018. The CPAT Final will be June 27, 2018.
Special Note # 3: The CPAT — Candidate Preparation Guide is included online. Applicants passing the written exam will be given the opportunity to practice the CPAT prior to the CPAT testing date. See Special Note # 1 and # 2.
Post offer pre-employment physical, drug test, and psychological evaluation required.
