Job Description:

Sarasota County Fire Department is currently hiring for at least 10 Firemedic (Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic) positions.  Applicants must have valid FireTEAM and CPAT.   All testing must be completed by March 31, 2017 to be considered for the current round of hiring.

If you have been a Sarasota County Fire Department volunteer for at least two years, please add this to the certifications section of the NTN application.

Salary:  $39,312 – 47,424 starting depending on qualifications

Department Information:  Sarasota County Fire Department protects 412 square miles with a population of approximately 350,000.  Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Operations operates 21 fire rescue stations and seven EMS only stations.  Our line staff consists of over 500 Firefighter/EMT and Firefighter/Paramedics who responded to over 55,000 emergencies last year.  Our Special  Operations Group responds to hazardous materials, high-angle and trench rescue, and advanced/heavy rescue incidents.  Our EMS protocols are progressive and we transport to 11 resource hospitals that include 2 Level II Trauma Centers.

  • 14 BLS engines
  • 9 ALS engines
  • 28 ALS ambulances
  • 3 ladder trucks
  • 1 special operations vehicle
  • 3 tankers
  • 1 fire boat
  • 4 Battalions

Job Requirements

Age: 18

US Citizen: Yes

High School Grad/GED: Yes or GED equivalent

Valid FLORIDA State Driver’s License: Yes

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes

Vision: As required in NFPA 1582

Academy Certification:
Required Certification:
Currently Certified State of Florida Firefighter II
Currently Certified State of Florida EMT or Paramedic

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors::
Felony/Criminal Disqualifiers
Conviction of a felony or a conviction of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude will disqualify a candidate.

Driving Disqualifiers
A poor driving record will classify a candidate as undesirable; however, it will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration.

Drug Use Disqualifiers
Pre-employment drug screening failure will disqualify a candidate.

Employment Disqualifiers
Failure of any of the following pre-employment tests will disqualify a candidate:

  • Driving records check
  • Physical examination, including drug screening
  • Background check

Financial Disqualifiers:
A poor credit history and financial background will classify a candidate as undesirable; however, it will not necessarily remove a candidate from consideration.

Additional Disqualifiers:
Tobacco Use:
The applicant must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year prior to date of application and throughout their employment with this department.

Types, Locations, and Number of Tattoos/Decals:
Perspective members shall be evaluated by the Fire Chief, or his/her designee, and tattoos/decals may be used as a disqualifier for potential employment. At no time shall a perspective member be employed or appointed if said person has visible tattoos/decals that are offensive, in excess, vulgar, or otherwise deemed detrimental to the professional appearance and positive public image of members. No perspective member shall have tattoos/decals of any type that are visible about the neck, head, and/or face.
