Job Description:

Sylvania Fire-EMS (SFE) is a career oriented, part-time supplemented, combination fire and emergency medical services department.  SFE is an “all hazards” emergency response agency which provides protection to the 48,487 residents of the City and Township of Sylvania and covers approximately 28 square miles.  SFE responds to approximately 5,000 9-1-1 emergency calls annually from four fire/EMS stations.  SFE currently provides services to the citizens of the greater Sylvania community with fifty-eight line personnel, three chief officers, one training captain, one fire safety inspector, eight part-time personnel and two administrative assistants.

Job Requirements

Age: At least 18 years of age and less than 41 years of age at the time of employment.

US Citizen: All applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States at the time of registration.

High School Grad/GED: All applicants must have a high school diploma or a high school general education development certificate (GED)

Valid OHIO State Driver’s License: All applicants must have a current, valid, driver’s license at the time of registration. If appointed, this license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.

Ability to Read/Speak English: All applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand and otherwise communicate fluently in the English language.

Vision: Category A conditions that would not meet medical requirements are as follows: (1) Far visual acuity less than 20/40 binocular, corrected with contact lenses or spectacles, or far visual acuity less than 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles, uncorrected. (2) Color perception – monochrome vision resulting in inability to use imaging devices such as thermal imaging cameras. (3) Monocular vision. (4) Any eye condition that results in the candidate not being able to safely perform one or more of the essential job tasks.

Category B conditions that would meet medical requirements if the candidate can perform the essential job tasks without posing a significant safety and health risk to themselves, members, or civilians are as follows: (1) Diseases of the eye such as retinal detachment, progressive retinopathy or optic neuritis. (2) Opthalmological procedures such as radial keratotomy, Lasik procedure, or repair of retinal detachment. (3) Peripheral vision in the horizontal meridian of less than 110 degrees in the better eye or any condition that significantly affects peripheral vision in both eyes.

Not required, but a degree in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Management or a related field is preferred.

Academy Certification:
All full-time applicants must possess, at a minimum, a current State of Ohio Paramedic certification or a current National Registry Paramedic certification. State of Ohio Firefighter certification is not required at the time of registration, but State of Ohio Firefighter II certification is preferred.

All part-time applicants must possess, at a minimum, a current State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician certification (State of Ohio Paramedic certification preferred) or a current National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification (National Registry Paramedic certification preferred) and a current State of Ohio Firefighter I certification (State of Ohio Firefighter II certification preferred).

All applicants will be required to maintain their certifications throughout their employment with SFE.

Prior Experience:
Not required, but preferred.

Necessary Certifications:
At the time of appointment:

Full-Time: State of Ohio Paramedic or National Registry Paramedic, ACLS, BLS, must be able to obtain ICS-100 and ICS-700 certifications within the first year. State of Ohio Firefighter II certification is preferred and is required within the first year.

Note: Ohio Revised Code section 505.38 Appointment of Firefighting Personnel (A) states in part: No person shall be appointed as a permanent full-time paid member, whose duties include firefighting, of the fire department of any township or fire district unless that person has received a certificate issued under former section 3303.07 or section 4765.55 of the Revised Code evidencing satisfactory completion of a firefighter training program.

Part-Time: State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (State of Ohio or National Registry Paramedic preferred with ACLS), BLS, State of Ohio Firefighter I (State of Ohio Firefighter II preferred), must be able to obtain ICS-100 and ICS-700 within the first year.

See the necessary certifications above. All applicants will be required to maintain their certifications throughout their employment with SFE. Continuing education to maintain State of Ohio certifications will be required.

  • Phase IV: Fire Chief’s Recommendation for Conditional Offer of Employment;

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors:
Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers
The following may disqualify an applicant:

  • A felony;
  • A violation of section 2909.03 of the Ohio Revised Code
  • A violation of an existing or former law of this state, any other state, or the United States that is substantially equivalent to any of the offenses listed above.

Driving Disqualifiers
Any of the following criminal traffic convictions may disqualify an applicant:

  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
  • Reckless Driving;
  • Negligent Driving;
  • Hit & Run Driving
  • Suspension or Revocation of your driver’s license (for any traffic violations).

Drug Use Disqualifiers
Any of the following may disqualify an applicant:

  • Any use of illegal drugs;
  • Any participation in the manufacture, selling, offering to sell, distribution, or transporting for sale any illegal drugs/narcotics;
  • Any other illegal drug use or pattern of prescription drug abuse.

Employment Disqualifiers
Any of the following may disqualify an applicant:

  • A poor employment history;
  • A record of insubordination; absenteeism or tardiness, dishonesty, incompetence, or consumption of alcohol in violation of company policy while employee;
  • Any conduct on the job, which would result in discipline if the applicant were a member of Sylvania Fire-EMS could be grounds for disqualification.

Financial Disqualifiers

Sylvania Fire-EMS does not currently review applicant credit history.

Additional Disqualifiers

The use of tobacco products, in any form, is prohibited as a condition of employment with Sylvania Fire-EMS.

Due to the acknowledged hazards arising from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, increased medical costs, and safety factors, it shall be the policy of Sylvania Township to provide a tobacco free environment for all employees. The smoking of any tobacco product, the use of “spit” tobacco and any form of smokeless tobacco is prohibited as a condition of employment with Sylvania Township.
