Job Description:

The Brunswick Civil Service Commission will give a competitive examination for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic, City of Brunswick. The examination will be given on Saturday, June 30, 2018 in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Brunswick Recreation Center, located at 3637 Center Road, Brunswick, Ohio. Exam times to be announced. On the day of the examination, each applicant must identifyhimself or herself by means of a valid Ohio driver’s license.

Starting hourly rate for 2018 is $18.68. The City offers a competitive benefits package.

An eligible candidate must be at least twenty-one years old, a United States citizen with a high schooldiploma or GED equivalent, and possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License without suspension or revocationin any state. The candidate must also have the following qualifications:

  • Current State of Ohio Firefighter II Certificate
  • Current State of Ohio EMT- Paramedic Certification
  • Valid Cuyahoga Community College ‘firefighter physical agility test’ certificate or

    current CPAT certificate from a certified organization (minimum pass time of 4 minutes, 30 seconds).

    The top ten candidates will be interviewed for each opening and are subject to an extensive background investigation. Under Ohio Revised Code, section 124.25, the Commission may refuse to certify aseligible for appointment an applicant… “who is addicted to the habitual use of intoxicating liquors ordrugs to excess, who has a pattern of poor work habits and performance with previous employers, who has been convicted of a felony, who has been guilty of infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct, who has been dismissed from either branch of the civil service for delinquency or misconduct, or who has made false statements of any material fact, or practiced, or attempted to practice, any deception or fraudin the application or examination, in establishing eligibility, or securing appointment.”

Before appointment, the candidate may be required to take a polygraph test. The successful candidate will need to successfully complete a pension physical to include drug and alcohol testing, by a licensed physician chosen by the City of Brunswick. The candidate may be required to undergo a psychological screening.

The position of Firefighter/Paramedic has a one year probationary period.

A minimum score of 70% is needed to pass the written examination. Extra Credit points will be added to passing scores with proof of the following: Honorable Military Discharge (Form DD214)-5 points.

A COPY OF FORM DD214 WITH HONORABLE DISCHARGE STATUS CLEARLY INDICATED MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE END OF THE APPLICATION PERIOD.

Qualified persons must register for the examination by completing an employment application and bringing proof of qualifications. A non-refundable $30.00 Application Fee will be collected with each completed application. Applications may be obtained (also available on City website) and submitted at the Brunswick Municipal Center, Civil Service Office, 4095 Center Road, Brunswick, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the following dates only:
