Job Description:

The Board of Commissioners of the Carol Stream Fire District seeks applicants to establish an eligibility list for full-time entry level firefighter/paramedics.


Applicants must (1) have a high school diploma or GED at time of application; (2) have a valid driver’s license at time of application; (3) have a valid CPAT card with ladder climb certification issued within one year prior to written exam date of March 4, 2017; (4) be at least 19 years of age as of February 24, 2017; (5) be a certified IDPH EMT-P (paramedic) with a current license upon offer of a position; and (6) be OSFM Firefighter II or Basic Firefighter upon the offer of a position.

Application packets are available on the District’s website ( or at the District’s business office at Station 28, 365 Kuhn Road, Carol Stream, IL during business hours, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except on February 20, 2017 when the office will be closed in observance of Presidents’ Day.

A non-refundable application fee of $50.00 (check or money order) is due and payable to the Carol Stream Fire District upon submission of the application. All application packets and all required attachments with certification must be submitted in person to the District’s business office beginning January 30, 2017, and no later than 4:00 on February 24, 2017 during business hours as listed above.

A written test will be given on March 4, 2017.  Those who have submitted applications should report to the training room at Station 28, 365 Kuhn Road, Carol Stream, IL for a mandatory orientation, study period and written exam.  Registration will be from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.  NO late entries will be permitted. Those passing the written exam will be given authority to submit preference points in the following categories:

(1) veterans – applicants who served in the US military actively for at least one year and who were honorably discharged or are now on inactive or reserve duty shall receive five preference points;
(2) education – applicants who have successfully obtained an associate’s degree in the field of fire science or emergency medical services may receive two preference points.  Applicants who have successfully obtained a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university related to the field of fire science or emergency medical services may receive three preference points;
(3) additional – applicants who have served as a contract firefighter/paramedic with the Carol Stream Fire District may be awarded up to one-half point per year of contract service, up to a maximum of two points for this category.  Successful applicants will undergo an oral interview to be held on a later date.
