The purpose of this position is to provide fire suppression, rescue and emergency services.Â This is accomplished by responding to calls for service; providing emergency medical care; responding to hazardous materials scenes; completing firefighting and rescue activities; assisting with fire investigations; providing public education; and conducting pre-fire planning and safety surveys.Â Other duties include maintaining equipment and fire stations; conducting tours; inspecting fire hydrants; and inspecting equipment.
â€¢Â Â Completes fire suppression activities by driving assigned apparatus to and from emergencies; laying and connecting hoses; maintaining pumping apparatus; ventilating structures; searching for hidden fires; operating hose lines; climbing ladders; searching for victims; and eliminating the possibility of rekindling.
â€¢Â Â Provides emergency medical services by answering calls and responding to requests for service; extricating victims from accident scenes; lifting and transporting patients; checking vital signs; and providing life support and emergency medical treatment.
â€¢Â Â Educates the public by providing instruction on fire prevention; overseeing fire drills; conducting fire station tours; facilitating first aid classes; conducting fire safety surveys; developing pre-fire plans; and answering general questions.
â€¢Â Â Maintains the fire station by cleaning the facility; maintaining the grounds; completing preventive maintenance and repairs on the facility and apparatus; cleaning, inspecting and replacing hoses, inspecting equipment and apparatus; and maintaining protective equipment.
â€¢Â Â Assists with fire investigations by reviewing information and preserving evidence.
Minimum Qualifications to participate in the test on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. are as follows:
â€¢Â Â Minimum age is 21 and maximum age is 35
â€¢Â Â United States citizen
â€¢Â Â High school diploma or GED certificate
â€¢Â Â Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
â€¢Â Â Certification as a Basic Firefighter, as issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, and must be fully certified with the Texas Department of State Health Services or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an Emergency Medical Technician Basic; OR Must provide proof of certification as a Paramedic (must provide a Paramedic Certificate issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) prior to entrance examination.

The test will be held at the following location: Pecan Rooms, City of DeSoto Civic Center, 211 E. Pleasant Run Road, DeSoto, TX 75115.
The attire for the examination is business casual. Please bring additional clothing for the physical agility test that will be administered immediately after the written examination, weather allowing.
Applicants must pass the written exam with a minimum score of 70 percent. The entrance examination must be completed within two (2) hours and will consist of a written examination from which the eligibility list shall be established and will remain in effect for a six (6) month period unless the list is exhausted. No study packets are available.
Thorough background investigations into applicants’ personal and professional lives are painstakingly performed by this department to assure the highest quality personnel. These investigations vary in completion time due to a number of factors.
