The Cities of San Gabriel, San Marino and South Pasadena is offering a unique opportunity and seeking highly motivated candidates that demonstrate exceptional customer service and exhibit a passion for public service.  The cities are recruiting to fill the position of Firefighter/Paramedic in each of the three cities.

In 2014, the three cities entered into an innovative agreement to share command staff (Division and Deputy Chiefs, and a Fire Chief).  As a result, the cities are always looking for ways to collaborate that result in greater effectiveness and a shared service mindset; all applicants for Firefighter/Paramedic should share that same spirit of collaboration and concern for the wider community.  Candidates that successfully complete the employment process may be considered for placement in any of the three cities.

Example of Duties

The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties, which are not listed below.

Under general supervision, Firefighter/Paramedics are part of a fire suppression/rescue team that responds to emergency medical incidents, structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials, spills/releases, and additional types of routine and non-emergency calls for service. Duties include, but are not limited to, fire prevention, completion of written reports and memoranda, public education, emergency/disaster preparedness, and station and apparatus maintenance.

Firefighter/Paramedics are required to participate in emergency medical services continuing education, firefighting proficiency training, and in-house educational programs. Firefighter/Paramedics may be directed to perform additional duties as required.

 Qualification Guidelines:

Requirements Education/Experience

Candidates shall be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.  All candidates must have and attach:  (1) certificate of completion of California State Fire Marshal’s Office accredited fire academy, or California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certification; (2) applied with National Testing Network (NTN) www.nationaltestingnetwork.com – Select City of South Pasadena AND completed entrance exam qualification requirements; (3) proof of passing the Los Angeles Area/Orange County Fire Chiefs Firefighters Physical Ability Test (Biddle) or IAFF CPAT within the last 12 months; (4) A valid California EMT-P License.

Selection Process

The most qualified candidates from the Cities of San Gabriel, San Marino and South Pasadena will all be tested together in the same selection process and final candidates may be offered a position with any of the three cities. Candidates who decline an offer of employment will be removed from the eligibility list.

An eligible list will be established from those candidates who have submitted a complete application, meet the minimum qualifications and passed the oral interview.  Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list for any of the three cities.  The list will remain in effect for up to one year from the dated establishment.  The Cities of San Gabriel, San Marino and South Pasadena reserve the right, at their discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the selection process.

Candidates determined to be most qualified on the basis of education and experience shall be invited to participate in an examination consisting of an oral interview (weighted 100%), psychological profile and pre-employment medical examination which includes drug/alcohol screening.  Applicants must pass all portions of the selection process and a thorough background investigation prior to final offer of employment.

Benefits

All three cities contribute towards a retirement plan through the California Public Retirement System. (CalPERS) The date of appointment and status of the applicant will determine the retirement formula.

San Gabriel

Current CalPERS members receive a 2% @ 50 retirement formula.  New members to CalPERS hired after January 1, 2013 receive a 2.7% @ 57 retirement formula. All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS. For benefit inquiries, email: hr@sgch.org

 Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

Physical Demands

Exposure to extreme physical demands would require the candidate to be in excellent condition.  This position requires heavy lifting and/or dragging of heavy weight, carrying, climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, running, jumping, twisting and other forms of moderate to extreme physical exertion.

Working Conditions

All Fire Department personnel work under extreme conditions that require excellent physical conditioning.  Requires exposure to extreme heat, flammable liquids, hazardous gases, smoke, explosions, chemicals, electrical hazards, faulty structures, inclement weather and communicable diseases.

 Special Requirements:

A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License by time of appointment.

After candidate is appointed, conditions of continued employment include:  Los Angeles County EMT-P accreditation required within three months of hire date and continued accreditation to practice as an EMT-P in Los Angeles County.
