The starting salary is $41,306.65. After successful completion of a 1 year probationary period, the salary increases by approximately $10,000 and an additional $1,482 is given for paramedic license pay. Employees are also eligible for an annual general wage increase (GWI) and an annual 2.25% wage increase with satisfactory performance reviews. FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
To apply, you must be certified as an EMT-Basic or be a registered nurse who is less than two (2) years from obtaining a pre-hospital RN license. You will need to attach a copy of your current certificate or license to the application.
Characteristics of the Job
Under general supervision of a company officer, engages in firefighting activities performing physically demanding semi-skilled operations in hazardous and toxic environments. Under direction from the project medical director and the medical protocols of the advanced life support system, provides emergency medical care under conditions of a considerable difficulty utilizing technical skills and skilled manual procedures. Under general supervision of a company officer, performs manual and custodial tasks of routine difficulty maintaining equipment, apparatus and fire department buildings. Performs other duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties
Respond to emergency medical calls and operate as a part of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team under the direction of adopted medical protocols and the Moline Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures.
Respond to fire alarms with assigned company and perform rescue, fire suppression or property conservation duties as assigned by the company officer and the incident commander.
Document activities through prompt, accurate and thorough completion of EMS reports, NFIRS reports, fire inspection forms and other assigned departmental reports.
Maintain paramedic proficiency and certification through participation in continuing education, clinical skills sessions and advanced training as mandated through the project medical director and the Moline Fire Department.
Maintain ambulance and inventory of supplies in a perpetual state of readiness to respond through daily checks, post use inventory replacements and sanitization of surfaces to prevent infection and disease spread between patients.
Operate departmental equipment in emergency and non-emergency situations in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Instruct and precept fire department employees and EMS students as assigned by the project medical director and fire administration.
Instruct the public through presentation of fire education and CPR classes.
Perform routine maintenance and janitorial duties on equipment, apparatus and fire department buildings.
Effectively communicate with peers, superiors, other city employees and the public; promptly notify superiors of situations of a problematic nature, situations presenting immediate danger to city personnel or the public and situations of possible criminal activity.

Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent, valid Illinois driver’s license or equivalent, ability to obtain and maintain State of Illinois Firefighter II certification and State of Illinois EMT-P certification, ability to obtain and maintain certification to operate as a paramedic by the advanced life support system to which the Moline Fire Department is affiliated or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess broad knowledge of fire behavior, firefighting techniques, rescue techniques and fire prevention practices; broad knowledge of Emergency Medical Services practices and the concepts of advanced life support emergency medical care; specific knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures of the Moline Fire Department and medical protocols of the advanced life support system; and specific knowledge of the geographic layout of the City of Moline.
Skill in the use and maintenance of firefighting protective equipment and tools; skill in the use of advanced life support equipment and the administration of advanced life support medical techniques; skill in the operation of emergency response vehicles and apparatus; and skill in the preparation of EMS reports, fire reports and other assigned written documents.
Ability to perform physically demanding heavy labor under adverse, dangerous and toxic conditions; ability to take orders from superiors and issue orders to subordinates in a paramilitary organization; ability to function at a high level in emotionally stressing and emergency situations; ability to communicate effectively with subordinates, peers, superiors and the public; ability to supervise assigned trainees and assure their safety and the safety of the public; ability to use knowledge of streets and avenues to locate emergency calls and plot the route of quickest access.
The current Residency Policy for IAFF employees requires that employees shall live within a 20-mile radius from the City’s Emergency Center, located at 1630 8th Avenue in Moline, within 2 years of hire.
