Firefighter/Paramedic

Salary: $50,115 – $69,014Annually

Job Description:

The Firemedic position reports to the Assistant or Deputy Fire Chief, in the absense of a Lieutenant or Captain.
The Village of Pleasant Prairie provides both Fire and Rescue (EMS) service to the community of Pleasant Prairie and those areas identified in the mutual aid system. The Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue Department is comprised of full time and part time personnel.

The position of Firemedic is a highly skilled and technical position within the Fire and Rescue Department. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide rapid, effective and efficient fire suppression, prevention, rescue (EMS) emergency, Hazardous Materials, and Technical Rescue services within the areas served by the Fire and Rescue Department.

Job Duties

  •   General fire services work to prevent and suppress fires. At the scene of a fire emergency, the Firemedic provides the necessary skills to mitigate danger to life and property.
  •   This position is also responsible for the enforcement of state, local fire codes and provides public fire education.
  •   This position maintains stations, equipment, and vehicles assigned to the Fire & Rescue Department.
  •   The Firemedic provides the highest level of pre-hospital care at the paramedic level.
  •   The Firemedic must be able to act and exercise initiative and independent judgment at the emergency scene while

    potentially under significant stress and hazardous conditions.

  •   The Firemedic is assigned to work shifts and stations. The Firemedic is also required to attend assigned training

    sessions and continuing education classes to ensure competencies.

  •   The Firemedic can be called to respond to stations, fire scenes, and emergency medical calls, as well as other

    emergencies while off duty.

  •   Duties of this nature and position frequently involve an element of personal danger and risk.

    Physical Requirements

    •   Must be able to comply with all Department policies and procedures, write reports, maintain records and daily logs.
    •   Must be able to respond to fire, rescue, and other emergency calls within the Village and mutual aid districts.
    •   Must be able to perform all fire and rescue related activities including knowledge and operation of all fire and

      rescue vehicles and equipment.

    •   Must be able to understand and carry out orders and assignments in both emergency and non-emergency

      situations

    •   Must be able to meet attendance requirements of the shift that requires employees to work during fire or rescue

      emergencies, weekends, holidays, and callbacks.

    •   Must be able to make public presentations and interact with the community at various social events and outreach

      gatherings.

    •   Must be able to maintain a positive attitude towards the job and patients.
    •   Must have considerable knowledge of the response area.
    •   Must have the ability to operate both as a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
    •   Must have the ability to work in adverse weather, terrain, temperature conditions, and humidity wearing various

      levels of protective clothing.

    •   Must be able to make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm up periods.
    •   Must be able to operate in environments of high noise with vibrations from tools, equipment, machinery, etc., poor

      visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces.

    •   Must be able to perform repair and/or routine maintenance of fire and rescue vehicles, equipment, mechanical

      facilities of building(s), building interior, exterior, and grounds.

    •   Must be able to demonstrate levels of empathy with others.
 
  •   Must join and maintain membership in the Kenosha County Specialized Response Teams – Hazardous Materials Team and comply with all of the continuing education and training requirements of said team.
  •   Must be able to learn and use current and new techniques, technologies of firefighting and emergency medicine. Attend training classes to improve those skills.
  •   Must satisfactorily complete 100% of the Paramedic Continuing Education curriculum sponsored by the department.
  •   Must have the ability to recognize possible exposure to infectious agents such as blood or bodily fluids, hazardous conditions such as heights, depths, physical injury and fast moving vehicles, and exposure to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, gasses, noxious odors, dust, and poor ventilation, and take protective measures as required.
  •   Must be able to wear personal protective equipment while performing various strenuous firefighting, rescue, and other related tasks, including wearing a respirator, SCBA and SABA.
  •   Must be able to face exposure to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma and burn victims. Ability to cope with repeated trauma and loss of life.
  •   Must be able to rely on senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency, maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic, and potentially life threatening environment throughout the duration of the operation.
  •   Must be able to connect and disconnect hose couplings easily and quickly.
  •   Must possess adequate maturity and life experience for the job, including reality based views of one’s own abilities.
  •   Must be able to operate emergency vehicles with due regard of speed, both day and night, or weather conditions.
  •   Must be able to remain at incident scenes for extended periods of time.
  •   Must have the ability to work in wet, icy, or muddy areas as well as come into contact with water or liquid.
  •   Must be able to interpret and understand body language and be able to locate persons by the sound of their voice, movements, etc.
  •   Vision; shall meet the requirements as outlined in NFPA 1582 Chapter 6.
  •   Must have the ability to move adult patients in confined or tight spaces and at different elevations with assistance of another team member.
  •   Essential job functions of this position require a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching, dragging, running, handling, grasping, fingering, grappling, balancing, bending/twisting, feeling, communicating, hearing, and lifting and the ability to drag a range of weight of at least 150 pounds.
  •   Must be able to perform related duties as required.

    Requirements – educational, certifications and experience

  •   Must hold and maintain a State of Wisconsin Paramedic license and credentialed by the local Medical Director/system and department. This includes supporting certifications in CPR, ACLS, and PALS.
  •   Must hold a minimum certification of Wisconsin Firefighter I or equivalent.
  •   Must hold or attain the following Certifications:

o Wisconsin Firefighter II within 12 months of hire date
o Wisconsin Fire Driver Operator – Pumper within 12 months of hire date
o Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue Motor Pump Operator in-house curriculum within 12 months of hire date o Wisconsin Fire Driver Operator – Aerial within 24 months of hire date

 Must successfully complete the following training courses; time frame is dependent on class availability and review by the Chief:

o Hazardous Materials Technician within 12 months of hire date o Rope Operations within 18 months of hire date
o Confined Space Operations within 36 months of hire date
o Trench Operations within 36 months of hire date

o Structural Collapse Operations within 36 months of hire date

 Current valid Driver’s License.

Application Requirements

  •   Must pass an entry level written examination.
  •   Must pass a pre-employment background check.
  •   Must not be on the US Department of Health & Human Services Office of Inspector General’s Exclusion list.
  •   Must pass a psychological evaluation.
  •   Must pass a pre-employment interview with the Village of Pleasant Prairie Police and Fire Commission.
  •   Must successfully complete a physical examination and drug screen.
  •   Must live within and must maintain residency within the residency boundaries, which can be found within the collective bargaining agreement.
  •   Must sign an agreement that they will not use tobacco at any time either on or off duty.
  •   Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  •   May work up to 56 (average) hours throughout the week. (24Hr on / 48Hr off, subject to shift definitions described in

    the collective bargaining agreement)

  •   This person is subject to recall 24 hours a day.
