Job Description:


This is a shift level position primarily concerned with emergency and non-emergency activities of both the fire suppression and EMS components of the Fire-Rescue Department.

General duties include, but are not limited to, emergency medical services as a paramedic, firefighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and operating firefighter apparatus.

 Examples of Duties:


  • Performs all duties of a Firefighter, plus:
  • Oversee the scheduled mechanical check-out of an assigned vehicle. This check-out includes all fluid levels, emergency signal equipment, safety equipment and systems, brakes, and any other equipment or vehicle components and systems that allow for safe mechanical operation of the vehicle
  • Ensure that proper documentation and notification is made to the appropriate authorities regarding any mechanical or operational defects found during vehicle and equipment check-out
  • Insure that interior and exterior cleanliness, of an assigned vehicle, is maintained at all times
  • Insure the completion of the scheduled check-out and control of medical equipment, medical supply inventories, medications, as well as oversee the replenishment, replacement, and/or repairs of these items as required
  • Administration of appropriate patient care at the EMT and Paramedic skill levels, as defined by Florida Statutes, in all emergency medical situations. This administration of care shall be based upon the Department medical protocols and any other policies and/or procedures set forth by the Department
  • Direct and oversee the appropriate patient care administered by an EMT assigned to their unit
  • Insure the completion of all appropriate documentation of fire, Basic Life Support, or Advanced Life Support medical calls as required or directed by the Station Officer. This documentation shall include, but not be limited to, patient medical reports and State fire reports. Such documentation shall be done in a concise, complete, legible, timely, and accurate manner. In the event that the EMT completes in part or in total, the required documentation, the Paramedic shall review this documentation and correct or cause to be corrected any deficiencies noted
  • Participate in Quality Assurance activities as directed by the EMS Division
  • Perform other tasks and/or duties as required or assigned by their superiors



•    Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalency diploma


•    Must be at least 18 years old

•    Current valid Firefighter Certificate of Compliance, Certificate of Statutory Compliance or Certificate of Training issued by the State of Florida from the Bureau of Fire Standards & Training

•    Current valid State of Florida Paramedic Certification

•    Successful completion of the countywide Physical Ability Test (PAT) at the Broward Fire Academy, Coral Springs Fire Academy or Hollywood Fire Academy, taken prior to hire date

•    Valid State of Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

•    Minimum (seven) 7 years driving record history

•    Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) certification prior to the date of application

•    Notarized affidavit regarding use of tobacco products

•    Certification by the American Heart Association as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider

•    Upon appointment, successfully complete and pass all Firefighter- Paramedic skill evaluations as set forth by the EMS Division


•    Have all knowledge, skills, and abilities of a Firefighter, plus:

•    Have a firm working knowledge of current medical, rescue and emergency procedures and protocols

•    Ultimate responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the rescue unit, and all equipment therein, as assigned

•    Have a thorough working knowledge of the Incident Management System

•    Have a thorough working knowledge of Medical Triage procedures

•    Have all minimum qualifications of a Firefighter, plus:

•    Certified by the State of Florida Department of Health Bureau of EMS as a Paramedic. For Firefighters hired after October 1, 1997 must   maintain this certification as a condition of employment

•    Certification by the American Heart Association as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider



•    Maintain a high degree of physical fitness and have the ability and strength to function physically under adverse conditions. Reasonable physical fitness compliance is expected. Maintain a high degree of physical and mental fitness and have the ability and strength to perform potentially hazardous and/or dangerous tasks under emergency conditions while using and wearing full protective clothing and a self-contained breathing apparatus with face mask. Reasonable physical fitness compliance is expected.

•    Employees will be regularly required to use hands, fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, lift and carry, pull, push and climb.

•    Employees must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements such as firefighting, extrication or CPR and must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds by themselves and equipment and patients up to 180 pounds with a partner in a variety of environmental conditions and difficult locations.

•    Employees may be required to work in a close or dangerous environment such as damaged vehicles or structures involved in hazardous conditions and must be able to swim at the basic survival level.


•    Employees must have correctable vision acceptable for day or night time operation of emergency vehicles. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus in limited light or overly bright situations. Employees must have the ability to accurately read medication name and dosage on drug labels and syringes. Must have color acuity adequate to make an accurate determination of skin and blood color.

•    Employees must be able to hear and understand information provided by emergency responders and non-emergency responders in person and through radio communications in distracting environments and while responding with lights and sirens. Employees must be able to listen to and determine lung sounds, auscultated blood pressures and other skills that may be required to effectively determine a course of action or treatment.

Work Environment

•    Duties are performed in variety of environmental conditions and difficult locations which may include adverse and hazardous conditions including but not limited to varying temperatures and inclement weather, Tasks are occasionally performed at locations with exposure over, in and around water, which may   not be accessible to the physically handicapped.
