Job Description:

RESPONSIBILITIES (not meant to be inclusive of all duties to be assigned):

  1. Respond on or off duty to fire calls and/or emergencies as directed.
  2. Respond to emergency medical calls. This involves rendering aid to victim(s) as required inaccordance with department policy and medical direction.
  3. Respond to fire alarms. This involves driving to the scene with proper equipment quickly and safely.This includes proper position of fire apparatus and operating equipment in a safe and efficient


  4. Rescue individuals from fires and other emergency situations. This involves evacuation of occupantsfrom burning structures and assisting them to safety. Administers medical aid to injured persons as


  5. Extinguish fires. This involves placing hose and ladders, operating pumps, directing streams ofwater, using other extinguishing agents as appropriate, ventilating structures, by opening windows or cutting holes, etc., and operating aerial ladders, fire extinguishers, bars, axes, etc., as needed. This involves working inside, outside, and on top of burning and smoke-filled structures.
  6. Perform salvage operations. This includes placing salvage covers, removing excess water, shoveling out debris, patching windows and holes, and performing other clean-up as directed.
  7. Clean and prepare equipment. This includes refueling vehicles, refilling water tanks, recharging air tanks and extinguishers, washing trucks and hand tools, drying and reloading hoses, and other work needed to return vehicles and equipment to ready status.
  8. Assist in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing, as necessary, all fire related equipment. This includes completion of proper checklists and reports of damaged and improperly functioning equipment.
  9. Maintain facilities and perform housekeeping duties as directed. This includes building and grounds maintenance, sweeping and washing floors and walls, cleaning living areas, and performing minor repairs as needed and assigned.
  10. Assist in fire prevention duties as assigned. This includes assisting with regular inspection of commercial and public buildings, checking and flow testing hydrants to determine water supply and assisting with fire prevention education, etc.
  11. Assist in fire and medical training. This includes providing classroom education for fire and EMS subjects as directed.
  12. Maintain and improve rescue and firefighting skills. This includes attending training sessions, studying material on fire hazards, firefighting or rescue methods, and maintaining familiarity with City streets and all department equipment.
  13. Shall maintain all Paramedic-related skill levels and licensure in accordance with the laws of the State of Minnesota.
  14. Keep supervising officers advised of fire suppression developments and perform other duties as assigned.


As determined by Management; currently 24-hour shifts Need to be available for call-outs



    1. A high school diploma or its equivalent
    2. Completion of an accepted program of training equivalent to IFSTA FFI and FFII curriculum and meetNFPA 1001 standards, or equivalent combination of education and experience
    3. Completion of current ACLS, BTLS, PALS and CPR courses with accompanying certifications orequivilant
    4. License requirements:
      1. Valid vehicle operator equivalent to Minnesota Class “B”;
      2. Certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as a Paramedic and able to be certified as a Paramedic in the State of Minnesota
      3. MN Fire Certification Board Firefighter I and II certified, and ability to be licensed by the MBFTE
    5. Successfully pass physical, agility and strength tests, medical examination and other exams
  2. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS are those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
    1. Frequently lift and/or move up to 25#; occasionally lift and carry ladders and equipment up to 100#,and carry (over the shoulder) or drag 150# victims out of a building, and/or assist in lift of 200#

      patients onto stretcher

    2. Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, orcontrols; reach with hands and arms; bend at trunk; squat; and kneel
    3. Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, crawl, talk, hear, taste, and smell.
    4. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depthperception, and ability to adjust focus
    5. Ability to remain in good physical condition and meet any departmental standards concerning fitness;
    6. Must be able to wear proper breathing apparatus
