The Village of La Grange covers approximately 2.5 square miles and a population of 15,600 citizens.


Mission Statement

The mission of the La Grange Fire Department is the preservation of life and property of citizens and visitors of the Village of La Grange from fire and medical emergencies by maintaining the readiness of personnel, the fire station, and equipment to promptly respond to a citizen’s request for emergency, rescue, or both accidental and natural disasters. This shall be accomplished through fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical services, fire prevention, code enforcement, training, and public education.

The Fire Department has a staffing compliment of 20 full-time personnel (Chief, three six-person shifts, a day / floater, and administrative secretary). We operate out of a single fire station located at 300 West Burlington Avenue. We provide fire and emergency medical (paramedic) services for all of La Grange on a 24 hour a day, seven days a week basis. We also provide as well as receive auto/mutual aid services for several of our surrounding communities. The Department averages approximately 1900 incidents annually.

The members of the La Grange Fire Department are dedicated and committed to providing our residents and the visitors to our community with the highest level of service.

The La Grange Fire Department is a proud member of the MABAS Division 10 and participates on the Hazardous Material, Technical Rescue, and Fire Investigation Teams.

The Department is committed to training the members to the highest level in Fire and EMS.

The La Grange Fire Department is an ISO Class 3 rated Fire Department.

The annual starting salary for an entry-level firefighter/paramedic is currently $55,123 effective May 1, 2013. The Village also offers a very competitive fringe benefit package.

 Eligibility Requirements

The LaGrange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is charged with the appointment of all firefighters. To be considered for employment, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • $35 Non-refundable application fee
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • No felony convictions
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess a High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • Current EMT-B certification at time of application (Note: At the time of hire the applicant must possess a certified EMT-P Paramedic License from the State of Illinois)
  • Be at least 21 and under 35 years of age at the time of application, or as otherwise provided by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act (65 ILCS 5/10-2.1)
  • Submit proof of a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Approved Ladder Climb card from a licensed Agency. Card must be dated within one year of the application deadline (valid if issued May 1, 2014 through May 1, 2015). Candidate must possess a valid and current CPAT card and Approved Ladder Climb card at time of appointment.

Firefighter Preference Points

Firefighter paramedic candidates who make the proper claim shall receive preference points as follows:

Category   Maximum Points Awarded
Veteran’s Preference •         Persons who were engaged in the military service of the United States for a period of at least one year of active duty and who were honorably discharged therefrom, or who are now or have been members on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service 5 points
Educational/Optional preference •         Associate’s degree in fire service or emergency medical services – 1 point

•         Bachelor’s degree in any field – 2 points

•         Master’s degree in any field – 4 points

4 points (not cumulative)
Experience Preference •         Employment by a municipality as a part-time/paid-on-call certified Firefighter II, Illinois/Nationally Licensed EMT-B or EMT-I (or any combination of those capacities) – .5 points per year (max. 5 pts.)

•         Employment by a municipality as a part-time/paid-on-call certified Firefighter III and Illinois/Nationally Licensed EMT-P – 1 point per year (max. 5 pts.)

•         Employment by a municipality or fire protection district as a full-time firefighter or firefighter-paramedic for at least two years – 5 points

Testing Process

The candidate orientation and written exam will be conducted on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Lyons Township High School, 100 S. Brainard Ave. La Grange, Illinois 60525. You are required to arrive at the testing location no later than 8:00 a.m. with photo identification (valid driver’s license or State ID) to sign-in.  NO LATE ADMITTANCE.  The testing process will consist of two tests: 1) a traditional firefighter examination that assesses cognitive ability and behavioral characteristics and 2) a scenario-based skills assessment that assesses job-related skills.
