Fire Fighter/Paramedic

The City of Ankeny Fire Department is currently accepting applications that will establish an eligibility list for full-time Firefighter/Paramedic. The city intends to establish this list for employment openings that may occur within the next 12 months.  The work shift for this position would be 24 on / 48 off.

An optional, general information meeting about this hiring process shall be held on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at Ankeny Fire Department, 120 NW Ash Drive, Ankeny, Iowa

Physical fitness and written exams are required for all positions.  Informational packets will be mailed to qualified applicants.  The written examination will be held on Monday, October 27, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. and the physical ability evaluation will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014.  All evaluation sessions shall be held at the Ankeny Fire Department, 120 NW Ash Drive, Ankeny, Iowa.

Successful completion of post-offer criminal background screening, drug test, and medical physical required.  Excellent wage and benefit package.  Starting annual salary for FF-Paramedic is $45,301.

 Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responds to fire and rescue calls and performs patient care, fire suppression, rescue, and ventilation in compliance with the department’s SOPs and directives on a scheduled and unscheduled basis.
• Provides emergency medical care to patients under current protocols as authorized by the department Medical Director up to the individual level of certification.
• Assesses and coordinates the resources and personnel to facilitate safety and quality care for all patients.
• Safely operates ambulances and first response units within the guidelines set forth by the department.
• Promotes departmental policies, procedures, objectives, safety, infection control and quality assurance programs.
• Follows written Standard Operating Procedures and verbal directives as applicable to emergency medical services for the department.
• Shall complete, or assure completion, and properly file required forms of the department.
• Participates in a quality assurance program through critiques and debriefings.
• Initiates and assists in developing and implementing improvements identified by a quality assurance program.
• Achieves Continuous Quality Improvement benchmarks as established by the Medical Director.
• Performs scheduled inspections and minor maintenance of equipment and facilities.
• Cleans and/or decontaminates apparatus and equipment as outlined in the departments Exposure Control Plan and applicable Standard Operating Procedures.
• Interacts effectively, professionally, and tactfully with the general public and all participating agencies; dispatch, law enforcement.
• Conducts educational and public relations’ activities in health and fire safety.

Entry Requirements and Skills:

Minimum Qualifications:
Age Minimum 18 years of age

EMS Certification
• Valid certification card issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of EMS or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Minimum certification level to apply is EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)

Firefighter I Certification
• Fire Fighter I certification document issued by the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau or any IFSAC (International Fire Service Accreditation Congress) approved training program

CPR Certification
• Current AHA, Healthcare Provider, Basic Life Support or ARC, Professional Rescuer Certification card

Additional Qualifications
• Valid driver’s license issued by a state licensing agency
• Paramedic specific – Current American Heart Association, Advanced Life Support certification card
