Two women were injured when a fire broke out in a seven-story building in the South Shore neighborhood, fire officials said.One woman was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center and the other to South Shore Hospital, according to the Chicago Fire Department. Both suffered smoke inhalation but were stable, fire officials said.

The fire started around 7:20 a.m. on the third floor of the building in the 7000 block of South Merrill Avenue, the fire department said.  It was put out by 8 a.m.

Cause of the fire was under investigation but was not considered suspicious.
