Barrington disbands paid on call volunteer firefighter program

“Fire Chief Jim Arie said the program is over because fire insurers are requiring all firefighters, volunteer or full-time, to have the same training and that is not feasible for the paid on-call staff.

“We train as part of our daily shifts,” Arie said. “We can’t really expect that from them.”

McCarthy, 51, and a 22-year volunteer member of the department, said he cannot remember the name of the person whose life he saved, but that person remembered him when they met some time later at a Barrington coffee shop.

“He recognized me and thanked me,” McCarthy said. “He said he wanted to pay for my coffee. I wouldn’t take it. I don’t remember the (specific) call, but it felt good to see him walking around.”
