ELGIN — A fire Sunday afternoon damaged a florist shop greenhouse on the city’s east side.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, which occurred before 2 p.m. at Town & Country Gardens, 936 E. Chicago St.

Owner Andy Engelmann said he had been in the greenhouse — located behind the retail center — about 15 minutes earlier to get something for a customer. Then, a customer at a neighboring car wash notified the shop about a fire in the greenhouse.

Firefighters extinguished the fire by 1:57 p.m., officials said, and they were working to determine what had caused it.

Damage from the blaze was estimated at about $10,000, officials said.
