MOKENA, Ill. (WLS) — Two people died after firefighters pulled them from a Mokena home engulfed in flames, Frankfort Fire District officials said. A Mokena police officer was treated for smoke inhalation.
Assistant Fire Chief Bob Wilson said emergency crews responded to a 3:30 a.m. call that a person may be trapped inside a home in the 9400-block of Magnolia Avenue on Wednesday. Mokena police were the first to arrive. Wilson said the officers were attempting a rescue and had broken a window or sliding door in the back of the home when they were forced back by dense smoke and heavy flames.
Truck 72 firefighters arrived to find one person in a hallway and another in a back bedroom. Firefighters pulled both out of the home, but neither could be revived with CPR. The Will County Coroner’s Office said they were pronounced dead at the scene just after 4:45 a.m. Their identities have not been released pending family notification.
