The selection process for Certified Firefighter/Paramedic consists of several steps and is intended to produce a pool of candidates who are qualified to become Lewisville Firefighters. Upon employment you must be a Texas Commission of Fire Protection Certified Firefighter and a Texas Department of Health certified Paramedic.  The City of Lewisville does not fall under State Civil Service Law.

The starting pay for a Certified Firefighter/Paramedic is $56,952.00.  The top of range salary for a certified Firefighter/Paramedic is $69,216.00. A full complement of benefits are offered including medical, dental, life insurance, retirement (TMRS), employee and dependent sick leave, vacation, longevity pay, and long-term disability insurance.  The City of Lewisville does not participate in Social Security.  Employees have the option of contributing to a deferred compensation plan.

Vacancies will be filled immediately based on the eligibility list established through the testing procedures.  The eligibility list is good for one year or until the list is exhausted. As vacancies occur they will be filled using the established list.

Employment Application – All applicants must complete an online application for the selection process. THE APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED ON-LINE ON OR BEFORE THE FOLLOWING DATE:

Rapid Panel Interview:
Applicants submitting complete application packets before the deadline, will be ranked according to education, experience, and references.  A minimum of 20 applicants will be brought in for a Rapid Panel Interview.  Those selected for interview will be emailed a Background Packet: Personal History Statement, Polygraph Statement and the Sage Background Questions. The candidate must bring the completed packets with them to the interview.  The candidates will be scored on verbal and non-verbal communication skills.  Those selected from the Rapid Panel Interview will complete a short essay exercise.  The essay will test the candidate’s ability to communicate using written language and provide a concise legible report.  The essay will be one (1) page in length and will be completed on site.  The essay will be over a non-fire service topic.   The candidate will be given two to complete the essay.

***  Any incomplete Personal History Statements, Polygraph Packets or supporting documentation will be cause for removal from the process.

***  No applicant will be admitted to the interview without an official picture ID (driver’s license, Texas state-issued ID card, or military ID).  The following IDs will not be accepted: Employer IDs, Student IDs, and other state IDs other than driver’s license.  YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO THE INTERVIEW WITHOUT THE REQUIRED ID.

***  Applicants requesting a reasonable accommodation for a disability in the essay process must submit such request in writing to the Director of Human Resources a minimum of five days prior to the Rapid Panel Interview/Essay.

Applicant testing will be conducted April 27, 28 & 29 2016. Candidates will be assigned dates and times after application deadline.

Physical Ability make up test:  
The physical ability will be CANCELLED if it’s raining on the day of the test.  Please check the weather. Make up test if it rains; May 2nd and 3rd, 2016.


 Essential Functions:
·        Suppresses fires to preserve lives and property.
·         Provides pre-hospital care at the basic life support level.
·         Maintains advanced life support, equipment, supplies and drugs as required.
·         Drives and operates the fire engine as assigned when the Captain or Driver is absent upon
completion of step-up process.
·         Performs maintenance and minor repair work on vehicles and equipment.
·         Maintains all equipment in a functional condition.
·         Maintains the station which includes housekeeping and repairs.
·         Conducts tours, talks, demonstrations and classes to educate the public on fire safety.
·         Participates in continuing training classes.
·         Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Causes for Temporary or Permanent rejection for the Fire Department Background Standards:

  • Be at least 18 years of age by the date of the initial interview.
  • Be Firefighter/Paramedic Certified required
  • Be a high school graduate or have obtained a G.E.D.
  • Have no felony convictions, or misdemeanor convictions of such a number that would indicate a habitual law violator.
  • Be subjected to a search of records to disclose a criminal record.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with good driving record as defined by City policy.
  • Have visual acuity needed to discern traffic signs and house numbers from approximately 50 feet, often in dim light.
  • Be able to distinguish between the colors red, yellow, and green.
  • Be able to successfully pass a validated physical ability test.
  • Be able to pass post-offer physical, psychological, and drug test.
Knowledge of: 
·  Knowledge of fire prevention, suppression, and rescue techniques.
·  Knowledge of department rules and regulations.
·  Knowledge of building types, construction and street locations within the City.
·  Knowledge of pre-hospital advanced life support techniques.
Ability to:
·  Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
·  Ability to follow instructions, safety practices and standard operating procedures in performing
assigned tasks.
·  Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly
·  Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or
job type.
·  Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
·  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
·  Ability to remain calm and decisive under extreme stress.
·  Ability to distinguish between red, yellow, and green in order to identify traffic lights and sign
·  Ability to successfully pass a written exam and validated physical agility test.
·  Ability to pass background investigation.
·  Skill in use of personal computer including Microsoft Office, Open Office or similar word
processing programs, e-mail and the INTERNET.
·  Skill in use of firefighting equipment and techniques.
 Special Requirements:
· Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.
· Must possess a valid State of Texas Drivers License Class “C” and good driving record as defined
by City policy. Must obtain Class “B” within six months of hire.
· Must be Certified Texas Firefighter/Paramedic
· Must have visual acuity needed to discern traffic signs and house numbers from approximately 50
