Three dead, more than 20 injured in Northwest Indiana crash

Chicago Tribune:

Dixie Juchcinski was stuck in the backup after a multiple vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 94 near Michigan City.

Three people died and almost two dozen were injured in a wreck involving 15 tractor-trailers and 15 passenger vehicles in Northwest Indiana on Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened on Interstate 94 east of State Road 49 near Chesterton about 2:30 p.m.

“The interstate is impassable at this time,” according to a warning from the Indiana State Police.

One person was dead when their ambulance arrived at Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Michigan City, and another died after arriving.

Of the seven injured, one is in critical condition and the others are all in stable condition, according to Bill Bero, a spokesman for the hospital.

Hospital information for the rest of the injured motorists and passengers wasn’t immediately available.

“We’ve been told to be on alert for more possible patients,” he said.

Between 20 and 30 state troopers are at the scene. It’s not clear how many vehicles are involved or how many others may have been injured.

State police said the investigation will last hours and the total number of vehicles involved may not be known until Friday morning.

Michigan City provided buses for transporting the injured and as a warming station.

Eastbound traffic is blocked and part of the westbound lanes are blocked by first-responder vehicles.
