“Later this month, Tinley Park’s Fire Department will join at least 24 others from across the state for a fundraiser to help cancer patients.
This year will be the first time Tinley Park firefighters compete in the Cure It Foundation’s Fire Up a Cure event pitting local fire departments against each other in a series of challenges. The event will be held July 26 at Saint Xavier University.
Tinley firefighter Kevin Holdefer, who will lead the village’s team at the event, said the fundraiser is a “great way for (fire) departments to come together and compete ultimately for a good cause.”
Each team of firefighters will have a young cancer patient serving as an honorary team captain, event organizers said. There will be at least five Tinley firefighters at the event, Holdefer said.
Julia Pratte, 16, is fighting Ewing’s Sarcoma. She will serve as honorary team captain for the Peotone Fire Department.
Pratte’s mom, Vicki Pratte, said her daughter is on chemotherapy treatment 16 and has one more to go. But despite the physical hardships brought on by her disease, Julia Pratte remains “very positive, very bright, very sunny,” her mother said.
