Two uninjured after fire guts Alton home

“ALTON — A woman heard a boom in her home Thursday morning, went downstairs to discover a fire in the living room and roused her sleeping mother. Both women escaped the burning house, 2323 Humbert St., with no injuries. “I’m blessed,” said homeowner Louella Clanton, 67, as she stood shivering across the street in Salu Park in the chilly morning air with several other people. “My daughter heard an explosion and yelled to get out, I don’t know a thing,” she said of what might have caused the fire. She said she was sleeping soundly on the main floor of the two-story house and did not hear the boom. Daughter Karyn Clanton, who her mother said is 44 years old, called 911 at 7:31 a.m. Later Thursday, Alton firefighters still were trying to determine what caused the blaze, but had not called in a cause and origin team. Deputy Chief Mark Harris, of the Alton Fire Department, said it appears the fire ignited in the living room, at front of the frame house on the corner of Humbert and Salu streets.
