Woman drops off newborn son at fire station

Chicago Tribune:

“A woman dropped off her newborn son at a fire station on the Northwest Side, officials said.

The woman, who appeared to be in her 20s, showed up at the station at Foster and Cumberland avenues around 5 p.m. Thursday and told firefighters she had given birth that morning, according to police and fire officials.

She said she cared for the boy all day before deciding to leave him at the fire station, authorities said.

The baby “appeared in good health” and was taken to Resurrection Hospital, police said in a statement. The woman was not taken to a hospital, fire officials said.

Under the Illinois Safe Haven Law, babies younger than 30 days old can be turned over to hospitals, police and fire stations with no questions asked.
