Chicago Tribune:

“A diver swam out to the middle of the Chicago River downtown and rescued a woman in her 70s who apparently had jumped in early this morning, officials said.

The 79-year-old woman jumped into the river shortly before 1 a.m. near Orleans Street. Passersby said they threw a life preserver to her but she would not take it and the preserver floated away.

About that time, the Chicago Fire Department arrived on the scene and diver Jaime Delgado started swimming toward her. The woman’s head was still above water when Delgado grabbed hold of her and took her back to shore.

She was taken in good condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to Chicago Fire Chief Joe Roccasalva said.
