39 North 2nd Street

14:08 hrs. NCCC (Northumberland County Communications Center) dispatched a 1st alarm for a fire at 39 North 2nd Street in Sunbury. Prior to the first due unit this was upgraded to second alarm status for a Commercial Structure Fire once it was confirmed that this was the Prison bringing additional law enforcement to the scene complicating issues due to the 208 prisoners and 32 employee’s being detained in the structure. The prison building is over 139 years old and was built in 1876. This was eventually upgraded to 4th + alarm status with multiple tanker task force operations in progress drafting from the Susquehanna River.

While the blaze is considered accidental and the cause is believed to be electrical in nature a fire marshal will be on scene to make the final determination.
A rekindle was dispatched at 06:01.”
