“WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Woonsocket police have confirmed a 66-year-old man has died in an overnight fire that also displaced nine residents.

The man was was pronounced dead at the hospital after firefighters pulled him from the triple-decker on Logee Street. The fire began around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Nine residents managed to flee the building, some rushed out through the fire escape.

Police initially said a dog was killed in the fire. But just before 8:30 a.m., firefighters brought a 3-year-old female named Blu out alive and reunited the dog with her family, who were in tears. The dog was taken to an animal hospital to be treated. A resident’s cat remains in critical condition.

According to officials, at one point, firefighters were trapped inside the building because there was too much smoke and they couldn’t see the staircase. Eventually they made their way out.

The Red Cross is assisting those residents displaced.

The structure has sustained very significant damage and will likely be torn down. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.”
