“A veteran Des Moines firefighter who was seriously hurt in Saturday‘s fire at the Equitable Building in downtown Des Moines talked exclusively to KCCI’s Mark Tauscheck Wednesday.

Doctors released Mike Herrera from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m glad to be going home, got a big old huge bed and a German shepherd waiting for me,” Herrera told Tauscheck.

Herrera made four trips inside the Equitable Building during Saturday’s fire. It was on the fourth trip following a hose line down a completely darkened stairwell when the trouble started. Already exhausted, he accidentally knocked his mask off.

“We’d been working so hard that I was breathing real fast and I couldn’t stop my breathing so I just kept taking in heat and smoke,” said Herrera.

He said it’s hard to explain what it felt like.
