“Apartments under construction at 155 East Center Drive, Gilbert, Az. This incident went to 5th alarm status bringing in mutual aid from surrounding area. It took more than 120 FF and 50 apparatus to bring this incident under control. 1 FF suffered minor burns to his hands with additional FF being treated for heat exhaustion, 3 Gilbert police officers were treated for smoke inhalation. Defensive operations were initiated after the 3rd alarm was sounded as crews put out spot fire at neighboring homes due to blowing embers. Due to the expansive nature of the fire and evacuation area was established encompassing Legacy Valley Apartments along with local residentâ€™s homes from Civic Center Drive to Nunneley to Devon. Residents were permitted to return home around midnight. The Media was asked to stage at 155 East Warner road for accountability purposes.Â Peter Smith from Gilbert PD stated that Gilbert Fire stood tall today. CBS News GILBERT, Ariz.Â – Some residents who had been evacuated near a major fire in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert returned home early Sunday.
About 60 people were evacuated from the area, according to Diana Rodriguez, a public information officer for the American Red Cross. Evacuees from an apartment complex near the fire were still displaced, she added.
Officials said the five-alarm fire began Saturday at an apartment complex under construction and spread to a home near Gilbert and Warner roads,Â CBS affiliate KPHOÂ reports. Gilbert Fire and Rescue posted on Twitter that homes from Civic Center Drive to Nunneley to Devon had been evacuated.
One firefighter suffered burns on his hands and three police officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Gilbert fire officials said.
More than 120 firefighters worked to contain the five-alarm fire.
Gilbert Fire and Rescue posted on Twitter that Warner Road, which was closed while firefighters worked to put out the blaze, has been reopened.
