Job Description:

The City of DeKalb, Illinois is taking applications for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic for the purpose of establishing an eligibility list. DeKalb is located in a university community and serves a population of approximately 44,000. The Department has a primary response area of 15 square miles and serves an additional 55 square miles by contract to the DeKalb Fire Protection District. In 2014 the DeKalb Fire Department responded to 5,213 requests for emergency service. The department is comprised of 54 full-time sworn employees, 3 sworn administrative employees and 1 full-time and 1 part-time civilian employees. Both men and women are encouraged to apply. Current starting annual salary is $59,772, plus an excellent benefit package.

Applicants must possess a valid drivers license; be at least 21 years of age, but less than 35 years of age prior to taking any test leading to employment as a Firefighter/Paramedic for the City of DeKalb. Proof of birth date will be required at time of application. Except applicants having previous full time employment with an Illinois Fire Department or Fire Protection District.

Applicants must provide evidence showing State of Illinois (IDPH) Paramedic License (EMT-P) AND successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Ladder Climb conducted by a licensed agency within the last calendar year. The EMT-P requirement may be satisfied by a letter issued by an accredited EMT-P training and certification program indicating that at the time of application, the applicant is a student in good standing, with tuition paid in full, who is expected to graduate the EMT-P program with a grade of at least 80%, within the next 3 months. Such status shall be demonstrated by a letter from the instructor of the EMT-P class. Applicants must have EMT-P status at time of hire, to be eligible for hiring.

All applicants must pass a written aptitude test, physical ability test, ladder climb and oral interview to qualify for the eligibility list. Applicants will be required, just prior to appointment, to successfully complete a background investigation as well as a thorough medical evaluation including medical examination, drug screen, vision screening, psychological evaluation, and polygraph to assess their fitness to perform the duties of the position sought.

City Ordinance requires that employees meet Council approved residency requirement within fifteen (15) months of date of hire.
