Job Description:

The City of San Gabriel Fire Department is seeking highly motivated candidates that demonstrate exceptional customer service and exhibit a passion for public service. The ideal applicants must be energized, self-motivated, diligent, and respect and support a diverse workforce. Compensation of $100 per month is available to employees who qualify and pass a proficiency examination in a second language such as Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, or Spanish.

The City entered into an innovative agreement with the Cities of San Marino and South Pasadena in 2014 to share command staff (Division and Deputy Chiefs, and a Fire Chief) among the three cities. As a result, the three cities are always looking for ways to collaborate that result in greater effectiveness and a shared service mindset; all applicants for Firefighter/Paramedic should share that spirit of collaboration and concern for the wider community.

Under general supervision, Firefighters are part of a team that respond to EMS incidents, fire alarms, or other types of routine and emergency calls for service in order to help others for the preservation of life and property. Additional duties include, but are not limited to, fire prevention, public education, emergency preparedness, and completion of written reports and memoranda. In addition, Firefighters with Paramedic Certification are required to participate in proficiency training activities, maintain Fire Department equipment and fire station, and perform other duties as directed.

This position requires heavy lifting, carrying, climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, and exposure to extreme heat, flammable liquids, hazardous gases, smoke, explosions, chemicals, electrical hazards, faulty structures, inclement weather and communicable diseases.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualifications Required Upon Application:
• Graduation from high school or successful certification of equivalency, with completion of an

Associate’s degree in Fire Technology or related field; a Rescue Systems 1 Certificate is also desirable

  • Certificate of Completion from a California State Fire Marshal’s Office accredited fire academy or

California State Fire Marshal Firefighter 1 certification

  • Valid California Class C driver’s license

Qualifications Required Prior To Appointment:

  • Possession of California State Paramedic License with Los Angeles County accreditation (completion of,

or enrollment in, state-approved training program at the time of application is desirable)

  • Proof of passing the Los Angeles Area/Orange County Fire Chiefs Firefighters Physical Ability Test (Biddle) and CWH written examination (CWH waived for lateral applicants)

Minimum Qualifications (cont.): Certifications Required Within One Year As A Condition Of Employment:

  • Confined Space Awareness and 24-Hour Hazardous Materials First Responder-Operational (FRO) Compensation & Benefits:

Range: $5,311-$6,456 per month. Benefits include a generous cafeteria-style allowance for medical, dental, and vision; paid life insurance; long-term disability and Employee Assistance Program; sick leave, vacation, holiday time; and education tuition reimbursement. The City offers medical insurance for vested retiree and family per Government Code 22825.5. A bilingual bonus program is available for employees who qualify. Promoted employees will remain in their current retirement tier.

Please note: The most qualified applicants from the Cities of San Gabriel, San Marino, and South Pasadena will all be tested together in the same selection process and final candidates may be offered a position by the Fire Chief with any of the three cities.

Candidates considered for employment must pass a pre-employment medical examination, which includes drug/alcohol screening. NOTE: The City of San Gabriel maintains a drug, alcohol and smoke- free work environment and enforces a zero tolerance policy relating to substance abuse.
